3 lbs. large potatoes (about 6)
¾ tsp. nutmeg
3 tbsp. unsalted butter, cut in small cubes
1 ½ c. heavy cream
¾ c. whole milk
2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. pepper

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º with rack in top third of the oven. Butter a 2 ½ quart. shallow baking pan. (not glass). Stir together nutmeg, salt and pepper. Peel and thinly slice potatoes. Layer potatoes in baking pan, overlapping slightly. Sprinkle each layer with salt mixture and some butter. Combine cream and milk. Pour over potatoes to and press to submerge in liquid. Cover with foil and bake about 1 to 1 ¼ hr until tender. Uncover and broil for 2 to 3 minutes until browned in spots. Let stand to set before serving , about 5 minutes. If made ahead reheat covered in 350º oven for 40min.
