1/3 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 tbsp. hot water
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 t. vanilla
1 c. flour
1/2 t. baking powder
1/8 t. soda
1/2 t. salt
1/2 c. nuts
1 pkg chocolate chips

Directions:

Melt shortening (if using vegetable oil, skip this step). Mix in sugar and then add hot water. Cool. Stir in egg and vanilla. Add dry ingredients that have been mixed together. Stir well. Add nuts. Spread in 8x8" or 9x9" greased pan. Sprinkle chips over top. Bake at 350º for 20-25 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.

Mom made these to take in our lunches when we were in school. So, they are a warm fuzzy for me. I made them for our kids a lot. For sure, I would make them to take with us when we went camping. They are so good, they never last long. It's a good thing that they don't take a lot of effort to make.
