6 potatoes, cooked until barely tender
6 slices bacon, cooked
3/4 c. chopped onion
2 tbsp. flour
1-2 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. celery seeds
dash of pepper
3/4 c. water
1/3 c. vinegar (apple cider vinegar preferred)

Fry bacon then drain well, saving the drippings. Saute onions in bacon fat until golden brown. Blend in flour, sugar, salt, celery seeds, and pepper. Cook over low heat, stirring until smooth and bubbly. Remove from heat and stir in water and vinegar. Stirring constantly, bring to a boil and cook one minute. Remove from heat and slice potatoes into sauce. Carefully mix in potatoes and crumbled bacon. Serve warm.

I remember first having this at a potluck picnic when I was a child. I first made it from the Betty Crocker Cookbook I received as a bridal shower gift from my Aunt Betty Hagenbach. She was a great cook and baker but she knew I would need help.
