1 (28 oz.) can diced or ground tomatoes
1Tbsp. butter
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1 med. onion, finely chopped
1 carrot, finely chopped
1 stalk celery, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 lb. ground beef
1/4 lb. ground pork
1/2 c. white wine
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
dash nutmeg
dash allspice
ground pepper to taste
1/4 c. heavy cream (optional but recommended)
3 Tbsp. chopped fresh parsley (do not substitute dried) (optional)

Heat butter and oil in a large sauce pot. When foam subsides, add the onion, carrot and celery and cook over medium heat for 8 min. or until onion is very soft but not browned. Add the garlic and cook 1 minute. Reduce heat to low and add the beef and pork, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. After 3 - 4 min add the wine and the salt - the meat should still be pink inside. Simmer for 5 minutes and then add the sugar, nutmeg, allspice, and tomatoes with their juice. Simmer for 1 hour. Add pepper to taste. Add the heavy cream and bring the sauce back to a simmer. Simmer for 3 minutes, add the parsley and serve.
