3/4 c shortening
1 c brown sugar
1/4 c molasses
1 egg
2 1/4 c flour
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
granulated sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar; add egg and molasses, and beat well. Add dry ingredients and mix. Shape dough into 1" balls. Roll each in granulated sugar. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with a few drops of water; just wet your hand and shake it over the cookies. Bake at 375 º for 10-12 minutes.

I think "Applehood and Mother Pie" was our first cookbook, and it is probably still our most-used. These cookies always come out exactly right, if you follow the recipe precisely. Weeze's Chocolate Chip cookies are still the best, but these are a close second!
