4 sticks (1 pound) unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 c sugar
6 eggs
8 to 9 cups all-purpose flour
2 T baking powder
2 t vanilla extract
1/8 t Vanillin (powdered vanilla, found at import store) optional

1 egg beaten with 1 T water
Sesame seeds - if desired

Preheat oven to 375 F.

Cream butter and gradually beat in sugar. Beat eggs until light; add to butter mixture and beat thoroughly. Add vanilla extract and Vanillin (optional). Sift together flour and baking powder. Carefully blend into butter-egg mixture to make a soft dough.

Shape dough with lightly floured hands into 7 inch ropes, about the width of your index finger. Fold each rope in 1/2. Twist 2 x's to form cookie. Place on cookie sheets, that have been lined with parchment paper, or ungreased cookie sheet. Brush with beaten egg and water. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired. Bake for 25 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool on racks.

Makes: approximately 5 1/2 dozen
