1 15 oz. can plain bread crumbs
1 cup sugar
salt to taste
pepper to taste(the more the better)
Vegetable oil

Use a cast iron frying pan. Add about 3/4 inch of oil; let heat. Add bread crumbs, salt, pepper and sugar. Mix all together and continue stirring until bread crumbs are crisp.

My father, George Riscile, told me the story behind the "bread crumbs." In Italy, the grated cheese was very expensive and most could not afford it. Someone came up with this recipe to use on their macaroni, in place of grated cheese. In those days, it was called "Poor Man's Cheese" Today, in my house, my grandchildren prefer it to the cheese.
