1 package yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1-1/2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup melted shortening
3/4 cup lukewarm buttermilk (option milk with 1 T. vinegar)
2-1/4 cups plain flour
1/4 teaspoon soda
1/2teaspoon salt

Melt yeast in warm water. Add sugar; set aside. Melt shortening in small skillet and add buttermilk to warm. Sift together flour, soda and salt. Add the shortening and buttermilk along with the yeast, water and sugar mixture. Stir with spoon until smooth. Let stand in covered mixing bowl 10 minutes. Place dough on flour board; knead and shape into small rolls. Place in a greased 10x12 inch pan or iron skillet. (Important let rise 30 minutes). Bake at 400 degrees 15 or 20 minutes until golden brown.Brush with butter or a butter and honey mixture.
