2 tbsp. shortening
1/4 C. sugar
Scant 1 tbsp. Salt
2 C. boiling water
2 Pkg. yeast
1/2 C. warm water
1 tbsp. sugar
6-1/4 C wheat flour

To make wheat bread exchange the 6-1/4 C. white flour for:
2 C. white flour
2-3/4 C. whole wheat flour
1/2 C. wheat germ
1/2 C. wheat bran
1/2 C. flax seed
If you don't have the wheat germ, bran or flax seed then just add 1-1/2 C. wheat flour instead.

In a large bowl pour boiling water over shortening, sugar & salt. In another bowl soak yeast with 1/2 C warm water and 1 tbsp. sugar until foamy and then add to cooled mixture above. Add flour and stir until just mixed and then let stand 10 min. Put out on floured surface and knead 1-2min. Then knead one time every 10 minutes, repeating 5 times. Cut in half, form into french loaves. Put on greased cookie sheet and let rise until double (about 30 min). Slash tops and bake 35-40 min @ 375.

Grandma Naylor was Tricia Campbell Fesler's grandma-in-law. This bread is a quick fix while everyone is visiting in the kitchen and the kids love to "beat the bread down" - that would be kneading- every 10 minutes.
