Sauce:
1 c. sugar
1 T. cornstarch
1 1/2 c. water
1/4 t. cinnamon
1/8 t. nutmeg
1/4 c. butter

6 Macintosh apples, peeled & cored (not too big)

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375º. Lightly grease 9x13 pan.
Make sauce: Place sugar, cornstarch, water, cinnamon, nutmeg and butter in small pan. Bring to a boil for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
For dumplings: Place flour, baking powder and salt in medium bowl. Mix with a fork. Cut in shortening with pastry cutter or fork until well incorporated. Add milk to bowl all at once and use fork to just moisten the mixture. Place dough on floured surface and form into a ball. Roll out until large enough to cut 6 six-inch squares.
Place the apple on one of the pastry squares. Fill center with a spoonful of sugar and sprinkle top with cinnamon. Place a pat of butter on top. Fold the corners to the center of the top of the apple. Pinch the dough together at the seams and press together any cracks in the dough around the apple.
Place dumplings in baking pan. Pour sauce over dumplings and sprinkle tops with sugar. Bake at 375º for 35-40 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream!
