regular salt
hot water
alum

2 quarts white vinegar
14 cups sugar
1/2 cup whole mixed spices - pickling spice

Directions:
Cut cucumbers into all shapes to make 2 gallons - place in crock (cannot have any cracks or nicks-- she uses a 5-gallon plastic pail that once held a large quantity of food for a store) Add to the cut cucumbers: 2 cups regular salt and 1 gallon hot water. Let stand for 7 days. After 7 days, drain very well and cover with boiling water that has 1/2 ounce of alum (5 level teaspoons) in it. Let stand for 24 hours. Drain and rinse after 24 hours.

Mix:

2 quarts white vinegar
14 cups sugar
1/2 cup whole mixed spices - Pickling spice
Boil all together and pour over pickles hot.
Pour off each morning and re-boil mixture for 3 mornings.
Then put pickles in clean hot sterilized mason jars and pour boiling brine on them and seal.
