1/2 cup soft shortening (half butter)
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 1/2 cups flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup milk
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
4 egg whites (1/2 cup), stiffly beaten

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two layer cake pans or one oblong pan. Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Blend flour, baking powder and salt. Mix in alternately with milk and vanilla. Fold in egg whites. Pour into pans. Bake layers for 30 to 35 minutes, oblong 35 to 45 minutes. Frost as desired.

This is another recipe from my Betty Crocker Cookbook, circa 1960. The tradition in our family is that I bake a cake "from scratch" for each birthday. If the request is for a white cake, this is the recipe I use.
