Wash cucumbers, make a brine that will hold an egg. Soak cucumbers in brine for 3 days. Take of of brine and split cucumber, remove the seeds and cut in small strips. Put in weakened vinegar to taste. Add 3 or 4 Tbsp powdered alum to a dish pan of pickles. Simmer for 2 hours. DO NOT BOIL, but so hot that you can hardly stir by hand. Drain again.
To 2 qts of sugar, 1 qt of vinegar bring to a boil, add 3 oz of mixed pickling spice.
Pour off for 3 mornings - heat and add 1 cup vinegar and 2 cups of sugar each morning. On the 3rd morning, pack and seal.
