1/2 pound chopped dates
4 tablespoons boiling water
1 cup shortening
1 cup light brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, beaten
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 cups flour
1 cup chopped nuts
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:
Directions:
Cut dates with shears or choppers. Pour boiling water over dates. Let stand while mixing other ingredients.
Mix sugar and shortening first. Beat until well blended. Then add rest of ingredients. Fold in chopped dates. Drop cookies on baking sheet. Bake until light brown about 10 to 15 minutes in a 375º oven.
