1 c butter 1 t salt
1/2 t baking powder 1 t cinnamon
3/4 c brown sugar 2 t vanilla
1 c powdered sugar 1 lg egg
3 3/4 c flour or (2 3/4 c flour and 1 c nut flour*)
Filling:
4-5 tart apples(about 5 c) peeled, cored and sliced
2 T brown sugar and 2 T boiled cider (or 4 T br sugar)
1/4 t salt 1 t vanilla
1 t cinnamon Topping:
1 c caramel, from a block or about 30 caramel
candies**
2 1/2 T milk or cream

Directions:
Directions:
1. Combine butter, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, sugars and vanilla until smooth. Add flour and mix until crumbly. Set aside half the mixture( about 3 generous cups, 15 oz). Add egg to the remainder.
2. Press the crust with egg into a greased 13x9 pan and bake at 350º for 17 minutes, until it is barely starting to brown at the edges.
3. Filling: Chop apples into 1/2" to 3/4" pieces. Combine with the rest of the ingredients and spread over the crust. Spread the rest of the crust mixture over the apples. Bake at 350º for 45 minutes.
4. Remove from oven and after 15 minutes cut them into squares, leaving them in the pan. Cool completely and then place the bars on a rack set over a piece of paper.
5. Topping: Put caramel and milk in a microwave safe cup. Heat until caramel is very soft.tir, reheating if necessary until mixture is smooth and pourable.
Drizzle over bars.

*Almond (toasted or plain), hazelnut flour (toasted or plain), and pecan meal are all good choices. Or grind 1 cup nuts in a food processor; be sure to stop before the mixture becomes pasty.
**Or use prepared caramel sauce.
