1 c. shortening,
1 c. sugar,
1 c. molasses,
2 eggs,
1/2 tsp. cloves,
1 tsp. cinnamon,
1 tsp. ginger,
1/2 tsp nutmeg,
3 tsp. baking soda, 1 c. sour cream or sour milk
1 c. raisins or nuts (optional)

Mix shortening and sugar, add molasses. Beat in eggs. Mix dry ingredients. Add alternately with sour milk until dough is heavy. Refrigerate overnight and roll out to about 1/4 to 1/5 inch thickness and cut with cookie cutters. Place on baking sheet and bake 5-7 minutes at 350º until done but not browned. Remove from baking sheet.
