1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 large egg
1/2 tsp. soda in 1 T. hot water
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour

Filling:
1/2 lb. dates, cut fine
1/4 c. sugar
1/4 c. water

Directions:
Directions:
Mix all ingredients for dough together. Boil dates, sugar and water until thick. Roll out dough, cut with round cookie cutter, drop a little filling on cookie then place another cookie on top to make little sandwiches. Or roll dough into rectangle, spread filling on dough. Roll up like a jelly roll and chill. Slice and bake for 12-15 minutes
