5 c. soft white bread crumbs (about 10 slices)
1/4 c. granulated sugar
6 T. butter or margarine, melted
3/4 c. packed brown sugar
2 t. apple pie spice
4 large baking apples (about 2 lbs.), peeled, sliced (8 cups)
16 medium dried fits, quartered (1 cup)
1/2 c. apple cider

1. Hear oven to 350º F. Grease bottom and sides of 12 X 8-inch (2-quart) glass baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
2. In medium bowl, stir together bread crumbs, granulated sugar and butter. Spread 1/3 of crumb mixture in bottom of baking dish.
3. In medium bowl, stir together brown sugar and apple pie spice. Add apples and figs; stir to coat with sugar mixture. Spoon over crumb mixture in dish. Pour apple cider evenly over apple mixture. Top with remaining 2/3 of crumb mixture.
4. Bake 45 to 55 minutes or until apples are tender and topping is golden brown. Serve warm.

High Altitude: Increase apple cider to 1 c.

Use food processor to make fresh bread crumbs. Tear the bread into pieces and place in processor bowl. Cover and process, pulsing 4 or 5 times, until coarse crumbs are formed.
