2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter at room temperature
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 large egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar

Topping:
1/4 cup granulated sugar mized with 1/2 tsp nutmeg

Directions:

Beat butter, sugars and salt in a large bowl with electric mmixer until well blended. Add egg and vanilla and beat until pale and fluffy. Mix flour, baking soda, cream of tartar then stir into butter mixture. Chill until dough is easy to handle (about 2 hrs.) Heat oven to 350º have cookie sheet ready. Shape heaping teaspoonfuls of dough into 3/4 balls. Roll in topping mixture. Place on ungreased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart. Press balls with bottom of a drinking glass to flatten. For a decorative finish, press tines of fork around edge of each cookie. Bake 12 minutes until golden brown around the edges. Remove cookies to rack to cool. Let cookie sheets cool between batches. May also be frosted after cooling
