Sauce:
2 T. oil, 4 garlic cloves, 1 medium onion, 1 can (46 ounces) tomato paste, 2 cans (6 ounces each) tomatoes, 4 paste cans of water, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. pepper to taste, 1 bay leaf, 1/2 tsp. oregano, 1/4 tsp. allspice, 1 tsp. basil, 1 T. sugar, 1/4 tsp. baking soda.

Meatballs:
3 pounds ground beef, 1/1/2 cups bread crumbs, 4-5 eggs, 1 onion chopped fine, 1 tsp. garlic powder, 1 T. salt, 1 T. pepper, 5 T. grated Parmesan cheese,
sweet basil, parsley and Accent (optional).

To prepare the sauce:
Saute garlic and onion in oil until golden. Add remain ingredients and simmer, covered, stirring occasionally until done. (Simmer for around 2 hours).

The recipe did not include instructions; however, meatballs can be baked in the oven and added to the sauce when done, or they can be slipped into the sauce and cooked while sauce is simmering OR brown them in a small amount of oil in a fry pan before lowering them into the sauce while simmering.

This recipe came from Jimmie Puccio's restaurant in the Greenbush Italian area of Madison. Grandma and Grandpa Gevelinger (Ray and Eleanor) visited this restaurant when they were dating. Grandpa especially always loved spaghetti. This restaurant was located at 906 Regent Street and was eventually replaced by Josie's restaurant, lost to fire after 2000.
