1/2 Shortening
1-1/2 c. Sugar
2 Eggs
2 oz. Red Food Coloring
1T. Cocoa
1t. Salt
2 1/4 c. All Purpose Flour
1t. Vanilla
1c. Buttermilk
1t. Baking Soda
1T. vinegar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream Shortening, Add sugar and cream until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time beating after each. Make paste with food coloring and cocoa, and add to mixture. Add salt and flour alternating with buttermilk and vanilla. Alternately add baking soda and vinegar but don't beat hard, just enough to blend. Pour into two greased and floured cake pans. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes.

To make icing:
You need:

5 T. cake flour 1 c. milk
1 c. butter 1c. sugar
1 t. vanilla

Mix milk and flour well and cook to a smooth paste. Cool, Cream butter and sugar. Add milk and flour paste, a spoonful at a time. Beat well. Add vanilla. Spread on cake.

**Note: Flour mixture must be cool and a mixer is necessary to mix .
