1 lb. ground beef
1 c. onion, chopped
1 c. cubed potato
1 c. carrots, sliced
1/2 c. diced celery
1/2 c. shredded cabbage
2-1/2 c. tomatoes, diced
1/4 c. rice
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp. thyme
1/4 tsp. basil leaves
5 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1-1/2 qts. water

Brown beef. Combine remaining ingredients. Simmer for 1 hour.

To serve, sprinkle with grated cheese.
