1 4 oz. package Baker's sweet chocolate
1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. (2 cubes) butter or margarine
2 c. sugar
4 egg yolks, unbeaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
2 1/4 c. flour
1 c. buttermilk
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten

1 c. canned milk
1 c. sugar
3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
1/2 c. butter or margarine
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/3 c. coconut, shredded
1 c. pecans, chopped

Melt chocolate in boiling water. Let cool. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg yolks one at a time. Add chocolate mixture and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients. Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet ingredients, beating after each addition until smooth. Fold in beaten egg whites. Pour into three parchment paper lined 8" cake pans or two 9" cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Let cool. To prepare frosting cook the first 5 ingredients until thick (approx. 12 minutes). Add the coconut and pecans. Let cool. To assemble, spread frosting between cake layers and on top of cake (do not frost the sides).
