2 c. boiling water
2 squares of unsweetened chocolate
1 c. sugar
4 T. flour
1/4 c. butter
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Cake ingredients:
2 c. sugar
3/4 c. butter
4 eggs
1 c. milk
4 c. cake flour
6 level tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla

Icing ingredients:
2 squares unsweetened chocolate
2 T. butter
4 T. cream
1/4 tsp. salt
Approximately 2 1/2 c. powdered sugar

Filling instructions:
Always make filling first and put layers together as fast as they bake and come out of the oven.
Mix all ingredients until smooth and put between layers when filling is cool.

Cake Instructions:
Grease and flour the layer pans. (You will have to re-grease between bakings.)
Cream butter and sugar well. Add eggs one at a time beating for a minute between each egg. Mix flour and baking powder together. Alternate adding flour mixture and milk to batter. Stir in vanilla.
Bake layers 15 to 20 minutes for 6 layers at 375 or
8-10 minutes for 8 layers.

Icing instructions:
Melt chocolate and butter. Add dash of salt. Beat in powdered sugar and cream until it is a good spreading consistency.

This was the famous layer cake that Myrtle, our grandmother LouCeil Lewis's housekeeper, always made for our dad, Robert Lewis, on his birthday. It was never made for anyone else until I discovered the recipe and made it for Carol's 60th birthday. There were no directions with it so I made careful note while making it. It is involved but it is special!
