3/4 cup shortening
1 1/2 sugar + additional 1/2 cup sugar
3 1/4 cup sifted flour
4 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cup milk
2 tsp vanilla
4 large egg whites (1/2 cup)
1/4 tsp soda
2 squares unsweetened chocolate (2 oz. melted)

Cream shortening, add 1 1/2 cup sugar gradually; cream until fluffy. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together and stir into creamed alternately with milk. Blend in vanilla. Make a meringue beating egg whites until stiff enough to hold a point then gradually beating into them the additional 1/2 cup of sugar, continue beating until mixture is stiff and glossy. Fold meringue carefully into the batter. Divide batter into equal parts. To one part add the dissolved chocolate. Drop the chocolate batter by spoonfuls into the pan. Swirl with a small spoon or toothpick to make marble design.
Bake at 350 degrees.
After 30 minutes insert toothpick to see if done.
