4 qt. cucumbers, sliced thin, but not peeled
8 small white onions
6 red sweet peppers, cut in strips
2 Tbsp. salt
4 c. granulated sugar
1 Tbsp. celery seed
6 whole cloves
1 Tbsp. mustard seed
1 tsp. turmeric dissolved in a little vinegar

Directions:

Mix the first four ingredients and let stand for 3 hours; drain in colander. Mix the remaining ingredients together with the cucumbers in a pot. Nearly cover the whole mixture with vinegar and heat just to the boil but do not continue to let it boil. Pack in sterilized jars.

This recipe came to Grandma from her friend Clara Landy. The pickles were so popular that Grandma Hazel sold them and used the money for personal purchases. She would say "I'll just pay with my pickle money".
