Directions: |
Directions:Beat egg whites. Cream sugar and Crisco. Add egg yolks to creamed mixture. Add alternately flour and buttermilk. (Start with flour and end with flour.) Dissolve chocolate in hot water. Add to batter. Fold in beaten egg whites. pour into 3 greased and floured cake pans. Bake at 350º. Test for doneness by inserting toothpick into center of cake. If it comes out clean, cake is done.
Filling (Some people refer to this as "filling" and put it only between the layers, then ice the cake with German chocolate icing. Some prefer to use this "filling" between the layers and to ice the cake. If that is your choice, you will need to double this "filling" recipe.): Mix all ingredients in saucepan and cook over low heat until thick. Stir constantly. Cool slightly. Pour between layers. Ice with German chocolate icing. |

Notes: Mama Kip, my grandmother (Margaret's mother, Cliffie) was a fabulous cook. Her German chocolate icing recipe is included in this book, as well.
