Mix and let cool:
2 c boiling water
5 TSP soda
Cream together:
1 c shortening
2 c sugar
4 beaten eggs
5 c flour
1 TSP salt
Mix with other ingredients:
4 c All Bran
2 c 40 Bran Flakes
2 c chopped nuts (optional)
2 c chopped dates (optional)
1 CT buttermilk
Add cooled soda water

Fill greased muffin tins 2/3 full. Bake 20-30 minutes @ 400. Store what you don't use in fridge up to a month.
