2 1/4 cups flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter
1 1/4 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup milk
1 cup chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside. Cream butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk and mix well. Stir in walnuts.

Pour batter into two 8- or 9-inch pans that have been greased and floured. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool 15 minutes in pans, then remove to wire racks. When cooled, frost cake as desired.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
This is the cake that Grandma Targonski often makes for birthdays and holidays. She uses the same recipe, without the walnuts, to make apple or peach upside-down cake. The batter is very thick so it doesn't seep down into the fruit.
