1 gal. cucumbers, 2 1/2 inches long

1/3 to 1/2 c. salt
8 small white onions, thinly sliced
1 qt. cracked ice

5 c. sugar
3 - 4 c. vinegar
1 - 2 c. water

1 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. turmeric
2 Tbsp. mustard seed

Wash, but do not pare cucumbers; slice crosswise in paper thin slices.

Mix salt with vegetables. Bury pieces of cracked ice in mixture. Cover with weighted lid and let stand for 3 hours.

Drain thoroughly. Combine remaining ingredients. Heat cucumbers in syrup, but do not boil. Pack hot, into sterilized jars and seal. Yield: 10 pts.
