1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs, well beaten
2 tsp nutmeg
1 1/2 cups milk
4 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
2 pkg yeast
4 - 5 cups flour

Directions:
Directions:
Bring milk to boiling and pour over shortening, sugar, salt and nutmeg in a large mixing bowl. Cool to lukewarm. Add eggs, flour and yeast. Mix until stiff enough to knead, but not as stiff as bread dough. Cover and let stand in warm place until double in bulk, about 1 hour. Turn onto floured board and roll lightly about a half-inch thick. Cut as you would for doughnuts. Place rings carefully 2" apart on greased baking sheet. Brush with melted butter or margarine and let rise about 20 minutes. Bake at 425º for 8 to 10 minutes. If desired, brush with melted butter and roll in powdered sugar when baked. Makes about 3 dozen.
