"As viscous as motor oil swirled in a swamp, redolent of burnt bell peppers nested in by incontinent mice and a finish reminiscent of the dregs of a stale can of Coca-Cola that someone has been using as an ashtray. Not a bad drink, though."--Excerpt from "The Moose Turd Wine Tasting" by T. A. Nonymous

1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp salt

Directions:
Measure and sift together into a large bowl: sifted flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, soda. Add shortening or margarine. Cut shortening into flour with fingers until mixture has consistency of coarse corn meal. Add, stirring quickly: egg, buttermilk, raisins and caraway seeds. Turn dough onto a well-floured board. Using lightly floured fingers, knead dough lightly, then shape it into a 8" circle and place in a well greased 8" pan. With a sharp knife, lightly floured, make a lengthwise and crosswise cut through dough. Bake in hot oven, 400º, for 40 minutes, or until golden brown.
