1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup raisins
1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
3/4 cup shortening, soft
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups quick or old-fashioned oats, uncooked

Directions:

Pour boiling water over raisins and let stand 10 minutes. Drain raisins, reserving 1/4 cup liquid. Sift together flour, soda, salt and spices into a bowl. Add shortening, sugar, eggs and reserved liquid. Beat until smooth, about 2 minutes. Stir in raisins and oats. Chill dough. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake in preheated moderate oven (350º) about 15 minutes. Makes 3 dozen large cookies.
