3 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp cream of tarter
1 tsp soda
3/4 cup shortening
2 cups brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
3 tbsp canned milk
1 cup chopped dates or raisins (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour, then measure. Resift with cream of tarter and soda. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and milk and continue creaming until well blended. Add flour (a little at a time) and stir until flour just disappears. Add vanilla and finely chopped raisins, if desired. Form into rolls 1 1/2" in diameter and wrap in waxed paper. Chill thoroughly until ready for baking. Slice thin with sharp knife. Place on greased baking sheet and bake 15 minutes, at 375º.
