2 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sweet mild

Directions:
Directions:
Sift dry ingredients 3 times. Add shortening using pastry blender. Make well in center, add about 2/3 cup milk. Stir dough just until it follows fork. Add rest of milk if necessary. Knead very gently, folding very gently, folding 8 to 10 times. Bake in 450º oven for 12-15 minutes.

I used this recipe quite a lot when my children were young. The biscuits always turned out light and flaky - great with sausage gravy or strawberry jam.
