3 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 scant tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. salt
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
4 T. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg and salt. Cut the shortening into this mixture. In another bowl, beat 2 eggs thoroughly, then add sugar, milk, vanilla and mix well. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the liquid ingredients. Mix well - dough will be stiff. Refrigerate for an hour or so. Roll dough to desired thickness, cut shapes, and bake on ungreased cookie sheet 5 to 7 minutes at 375.º

Mother made these cookies every Christmas and we kids decorated them. I carried on the tradition with my own family, so I figure I have eaten these cookies just about every Christmas since I could chew! I also make pumpkin shaped cookies for Halloween and Thanksgiving.
