For cake:
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 oz. red food coloring
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. soda
1 tbsp. vinegar

For icing:
1 c. milk
3 tbsp. flour
1 c. sugar
1 c. butter

Directions:
Directions:
To make cake:
Cream shortening; add sugar and eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring. Add to cream mixture; add buttermilk, salt, flour and vanilla. Last, add soda and vinegar; let stand a little while.

Bake in greased and floured 9 inch pans at 350º about 30 minutes.

To make icing:
Cook milk and flour until thick, stirring while cooking. Cream sugar and butter until fluffy. Add to flour mixture, and spread on cake.
