1 c dates, chopped 1 1/4 c boiling water
1 tsp baking soda 3/4 c shortening
3/4 c sugar 1 1/2 c flour
2 eggs 1 t baking powder
1 t salt 1 t vanilla
Topping
1/3 c sugar 1 6oz pkg chocolate chips
1/2 c chopped nuts

Directions:

1. Combine dates, water and baking soda. Soak until most of liquid is absorbed.
2. Cream sugar and shortening, then add eggs one at a time and beat until well mixed.
4. Combine flour, baking powder and salt and slowly mix into egg mixture.
5. Add dates and vanilla and beat about 2 min. until mixed well.
6. Pour batter into greased 9 x 13 pan and sprinkle sugar, chips and nuts on top.
7. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes.

You won't even taste the dates. They just add moisture and texture. I don't like dates and never even knew they were in the cake until I made it myself.
