Filling:
8 oz. dates, finely chopped
1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tbsp. flour

Crust and topping:
1-1/4 cups quick cooking oatmeal
1-1/2 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 cup butter or margarine, at room temperature

Directions:
Directions:
In a small saucepan, combine all filling ingredients. Cook over low heat for 5 to 7 minutes, or until thickened. Set aside for 15 minutes to cool.
Preheat oven to 350-degrees.
To make crust mix together the oats, flour, brown sugar and baking soda. With a fork, blend the butter into the oat mixture. Divide in half and press one half on the bottom of a 13x9-inch ungreased pan. Spread the date filling on top of this. Sprinkle the date mixture with the remaining oat mixture and press with hand slightly. Bake about 30 minutes. Cool completely before cutting into squares.
