2/3 cup butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup white sugar
2-1/2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup nuts, optional
1 cup apples, cut up, optional

In large bowl mix butter, brown sugar, white sugar and flour until crumbly. Reserve 1 cup of the crumb mixture for topping. Add to remaining mixture, baking soda, milk, egg, vanilla and salt. (add apples and nuts if using them) Stir until well mixed. Pour batter into a 10-inch tube pan. Top with reserved cup of crumb mixture. Bake at 350-degrees for about 1 hour.

Note: To make buttermilk from regular milk add 1 Tbsp. lemon juice to one cup of milk and let it set for 5 minutes. Use as you would buttermilk.
