1 cup Crisco
2 cups packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
3-1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

Date Filling:
2 cups finely cut dates
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Prepare the filling. Combine all in a saucepan. Cook, stirring constantly until mixture thickens. Stir in nuts. Cool.

Heat oven to 400. Mix shortening, sugar and eggs. Stir in water and vanilla. Blend in remaining ingredients. Drop by teaspoonfuls about 2" apart on ungreased baking sheet. Place 1/2 teaspoon filling on each teaspoonful of dough and cover with 1/2 teaspoon dough. Bake 10-12 minutes. Remove immediately from the cookie sheet.
