1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 oz. (1/4c.) red food coloring
1 tsp. salt
1 c.buttermilk
2 1/4 c. flour
1 tsp. cocoa
1 tsp. vinegar
1 tsp. soda

Directions:
Directions:
Mix vinegar and soda in small cup and let stand. Cream sugar, shortening, and cold eggs. Mix well. Make a paste of cocoa and a little bit of the red coloring, salt and flour and add to creamed mixture. Then add buttermilk, rest if coloring, salt and flour alternately. Add vanilla. Last, add vinegar and soda. Stir before adding Pour into 2 (8 inch) pans and bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool and split layers in halves.

FROSTING

1 c. milk 3 tbsp. flour
Cook until thick. Cool and stir. Cream 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup butter until fluffy like whipped cream. Add 1 tbsp.vanilla. Mix in flour mixture gradually beating all the time. Spread frosting between layers and on top, but not on sides
