1 1/3 c. sifted flour
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. cocoa
1 tsp soda
1 egg
1/2 c. melted shortening
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 c. sour milk*
1/2 c. hot water (not quite boiling)

Directions:
Directions:
Sift dry ingredients in bowl; break egg in center. Pour in shortening, milk and vanilla. Add hot water. Mix - do not beat.

Heat oven to 325º. Pour batter into greased 8x8 pan. Bake for 25 minutes.

* Milk must be sour or cake won't rise. You can sour milk by stirring in 1 tsp vinegar.
