2 c. dates, cut up
1 c. nuts, chopped
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. soda
2 c. boiling water
1 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
4 eggs
3 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Pour the soda and boiling water over the dates, nuts and cinnamon and let stand while you mix together the shortening, sugar and eggs. Add the flour salt and vanilla. Add the date mixture and mix.

Bake in a large cake pan at 350 degrees for 55 minutes.
