1 cake compressed yeast (6 3/4 tsp. yeast)
4 c. lukewarm water
1/2 c. molasses
1 tbsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
6 c. white flour
2 c. whole wheat flour or graham flour
1/2 c. sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in 1/2 c. of lukewarm water. Let stand 15 minutes. Add remaining water, molasses, salt, sugar, and shortening. Add enough flour to make a soft sponge. Knead about 10 minutes. Add rest of flour to make stiff dough. Knead. Place in a greased bowl. Cover and set in a warm place. When doubled in bulk, knead again and let rise once more. Then shape into loaves. Light rise until light. Bake about 45 minutes in moderate (350º F) oven. Brush tops with melted butter. Makes 4 loaves.
