1 c. walnuts
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. dates, cut up
1/2 tsp. salt
Mix, and pour 1 cup of boiling water over mixture. Cool.

1 c. sugar
1/4 c. shortening
2 egg yolks
1 1/2 tsp.baking powder
1 1/2 c. flour

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening. Add egg yolks, beat. Mix in above mixture, add dry ingredients. Fold in 2 beaten egg whites. Bake 350º about 35 - 40 min. in a 9" x 13" greased and floured pan. After cake has cooled, cut cake in 1" square pieces. Put a layer of cake at the bottom of a large torte plate and place fruit (bananas, pineapple chunks, sliced peaches & maraschino cherries) & a layer of whipped cream. Then place another layer of cake & follow with fruit & whipped cream.

This is a special dessert that was made for special occasions like bridal showers. I have my Mom's name (Elivra Lange) on the recipe but this recipe has been handed down through the family.
