1 cup chopped dates
1 ½ cup boiling water
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sugar
½ cup shortening (butter works)
2 eggs
1 ½ cup all-purpose flour
¾ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
TOPPING:
¼ to ½ cup sugar
6 ounces chocolate chips
½ cup walnuts, chopped (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
1. Pour boiling water over dates and soda in a small bowl. Let cool to lukewarm.
2. Preheat oven to 350 F and grease a 9x13 inch cake pan.
3. Combine ingredients as directed below.

In a large bowl, beat together the shortening and sugar until creamy and smooth. Add the eggs and beat well. Add the cooled date mixture, mixing well.
In a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. Add to sugar and egg mixture, mixing well.

Spread cake batter in a 9 x 13 inch greased pan. Sprinkle ¼ - ½ cup of sugar evenly over the batter. Then sprinkle 1 cup or 6 ounces of chocolate chips over the batter. Sprinkle on nuts if using.

Bake for 30-35 minutes until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Refrigerate leftovers if weather is warm, as the cake is so moist it may mold.

My mother Irene Braker made this cake decades ago and I still enjoy making it and serving it. With real whipped cream of course!
PS. The dates dissolve, so date-haters would never know.
