3/4 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 c. molasses
1 egg
2 1/4 c. flour
sugar

Directions:

Beat shortening. Add brown sugar, baking soda, and spices and beat until combined. Beat in molasses and egg. Beat in flour. Shape dough into 1" balls. Roll in sugar. Place 2" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375º for 8 to 10 minutes, until cookies are set and tops are cracked.
