2 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. butter
2 eggs
3 c. flour
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. cream of tarter
Filling
1 1/2 lb.dates (the bulk dates that are "smashed " work the best)
3/4 c. water
3/4 c. brown sugar
pinch of salt
3/4 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar; add eggs; mix flour, soda, and cream of tarter and add to sugar mixture. Mix well. Divide dough into small lumps and roll on floured surface; you will need to add a little flour as you do this. Spread on the date filling and roll like a jelly roll; store in cool place over night. Slice and bake on greased sheets. Bake at 425 for 8-10 minutes. Wash sheet after each batch. Cool on wire racks.
Filling: place all ingredients in a pan and boil until thick. Cool before spreading on dough.
