1/2 c.shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. red food coloring (lg bottle)
2 1/4 c. cake flour, sifted
2 tbsp cocoa
1 tsp salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp soda
1 tbsp vinegar
2 eggs

Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs beating
well. Make paste of food coloring and cocoa.
Alternately add flour and milk mixture, beat well.
Dissolve soda in vinegar and add to batter, add
salt and vanilla. Bake in layer pans that are
greased and floured at 350 degrees about 30 minutes.
Frost with the following.
3 tablespoons flour 1 cup sugar
1 cup milk 1 tsp vanilla
1 cup butter
Frosting Directions:
Cook flour and milk until thick --cool.
Cream butter and sugar --beat until fluffy.
Add vanilla - combine with flour mixture
and beat well. Frost cake.
